The Common Problem

Regardless of what business you are in, every single one of us shares one common enemy - variation. It shows up, grows, and causes countless problems throughout an organization. Variation usually goes undetected at first, but as it grows it affects product quality, response time, accounting practices, and customer service. Variation can make or break a customer’s experience. Some of its examples are:

  • Short Term: "It really took a long time for the food to come out at this restaurant I just tried out." - Immediate Negative Impact
  • Long Term: "I’ve been going to the restaurant for years, but the last few times the service has been slow." - Long-term Negative Impact

This is a simple example, but keep in mind, we are looking at impacts to customers, interruptions between internal departments and negative impact to any other stakeholder (supplier, the community in which business is done, partner companies).  The list is endless.

And sadly, in most cases, both are impacted at the same time.

Understanding Variation

This is the one thing everyone – owners, employees, suppliers, and customers – hate. It rears its ugly head in six basic forms.

  • Measurement – How are we managing this process currently? Are we lacking in tracking the metrics?
  • Methods – How the work is being done?
  • Materials – Are we using the proper resources?
  • Machines – Are we utilizing the best equipment? Are our suppliers?
  • Mother Nature – Environment in general, all outside forces that don’t fit in the other categories.
  • Man – Many think this is the main cause, but it is usually the last. Man can be trained and incentivized. This is the key to long-term success in our projects.

When is the last time you really sat down and did a true evaluation of these? Be honest. What changes did you implement? What metrics did you put in place to manage them?

If you don't know or don't have the answers to these questions we should talk... CONFIDENTIALLY.

The Solution

How can variation be battled? How can you eliminate it from your business? How can you ensure that every customer has the same experience every time? And most importantly, once it is gone, how can it be gone forever? It cannot be done with a Financial Statement Analysis. Surveys work, but oftentimes they have their own inherent bias rendering them unreliable. The only way to manage this is by obtaining solid, impartial data through observation and process analysis.
